Flooring Calculator

Flooring area with cuts and waste covered.

Measure your room in feet and enter your waste percentage to get the flooring area you actually need to buy. Hardwood, laminate, and vinyl all need extra for cuts along walls, so the calculator adds your waste allowance automatically. The default 10% suits most straight-lay installations.

How it's calculated

Area = length × width in feet, then total = area × (1 + waste % ÷ 100). The waste covers cuts, offcuts, and a few spare boards.

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I add for flooring?

10% is standard for straight installations. Herringbone or diagonal patterns waste more — use 15–20% for those.

How do I calculate flooring area?

Multiply the room's length by its width in feet. A 15 ft × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft — then add your waste percentage on top.

What is the difference between sqft and sq ft?

They are the same unit — one square foot. People just shorten 'square foot' to 'sqft' or 'sq ft' in listings and quotes.
