Data Storage Converter

Convert bytes, KB, MB, GB, and TB with binary (1024) units.

Convert data storage between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, and terabytes using the binary (1024-based) units your devices actually use. Check file sizes, plan storage, and understand what your hard drive really holds.

How it's calculated

Binary storage units scale by 1,024 at each step: 1 KB = 1,024 B, 1 MB = 1,024 KB, and so on. The result is value × 1024^(from-step) ÷ 1024^(to-step).

Frequently asked questions

How many megabytes are in a gigabyte?

1,024 MB. Enter 1, choose GB → MB — storage units step by 1,024.

Why 1024 and not 1000?

This uses the binary convention (1 KB = 1,024 bytes) that operating systems use. Drive makers sometimes advertise decimal units (1,000-based), which is why a “1 TB” drive shows as ~931 GB.

How much space do 1,000 photos take?

Roughly 0.93 GB — enter 1, choose MB → GB, and multiply by 1000. A thousand photos at 5 MB each is about 4.9 GB.
