Download Time Calculator

Exact download times from file size and speed.

Enter the file size in gigabytes and your internet speed in megabits per second to see exactly how long a download will take. It shows a friendly 'hours, minutes, seconds' breakdown plus the raw second count. Remember that real speeds vary — ISP-advertised speeds are usually the maximum, not the average.

How it's calculated

Seconds = file size (GB) × 8,000 ÷ speed (Mbps), because one gigabyte holds 8,000 megabits. The seconds are then shown as hours, minutes, and seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the formula file size × 8000 ÷ speed?

Because file sizes are measured in gigabytes (GB) while speeds are measured in megabits per second (Mbps). One GB contains 8,000 megabits, so the conversion factor is 8,000.

Why does my download take longer than this?

Check your real speed with a speed test, and use the download number from it. Peak-time slowdowns and Wi-Fi losses mean real downloads often take 20–30% longer.

How do I enter 1 Gbps?

Multiply the number by 1,000. So 1 Gbps equals 1,000 Mbps — our calculator works in Mbps, so just type 1000 as the speed.
